Friday Find with Sara Hopkins Realtor | Episode 21 – Captain Roy’s

Posted at 10:36 am on July 30, 2020

Looking for a great place to enjoy an outdoor patio while practicing social distance? Captain Roy’s at Birdland Marina has one of the best scenes in town. This neighborhood spot offers cold beer, awesome food (their fish & chips are approved my British hubby) and gorgeous views overlooking the river. It’s an experience you won’t find anywhere else in Des Moines.

Located on the Neal Smith Trail, you can access it via bike, car, boat or even kayak! Their delicious menu is served from their very own food truck and there’s never a shortage of live music options. Not only is Captain Roys a great place to enjoy the views, food and fun, the owners are always giving back to our community.

While you’re in the neighborhood, you can also go across the street to Union Park and check out the rocket slide. The Heritage Carousel is also usually a great stop, but it’s closed this summer due to COVID. (next week’s Friday Find will be showcasing more of Union Park so be sure to check it out!)

This whole Highland Park/Oak Park Neighborhood is experiencing a wonderful renaissance – the Parks Area Foundation and the City of Des Moines are close to completing work on the Riverview Park which will include an amphitheater and all-access playground, and the the Highland Park business district has great shops and restaurants. Check out https://www.parksareafoundation.org/ for more info on the area.
