Captain Roy’s at Birdland Marina

Hands down, my favorite thing about living in Des Moines is the easy access to all our bike trails. I live just off the Great Western Trail and I can bike from my house to downtown in roughly 15/20 minutes. We can bike to Cumming Tap from our house, stopping off at Orlondo’s for a beer or pizza. Take the trail another direction and we are quickly at Greenwood Park. The possibilities are endless and we still have so much more to explore. This MAP OF DES MOINES TRAILS will show you how they all connect and where you can start from. Exploring all of these is on my bucket list.

Des Moines has a new addition to our city and an idea I’ve wanted to happen for a long time. Captain Roy’s at Birdland Marina right off the bike path offers cold beer, awesome food (their fish & chips are approved my British hubby who’s a bit of a fish & chips snob!) and gorgeous views overlooking the river.

Birdland Marina and all of the Union Park neighborhood holds a special place in my heart. My Grandma lived just a few blocks away from the marina and I spent my childhood at Union Park, I mean didn’t everyone get to experience 3rd degree burns from that rocket ship slide? {Fun fact, my dad even proposed to my mom at Union Park in 1971!} So seeing this neighborhood begin it’s revitalization makes my heart so happy. Riverview Rising is part of the Parks Foundation and is actively working to revitalize Riverview Park. I am positive this area is going to continue to grow and develop as our city and citizens invest in making it the best it can be. I also can’t wait to see more happening along our river. With all the efforts of the DNR and the non-profit organization, Iowa Rivers Revival, I know our city is headed in the right direction and we will continue to see the areas along our river flourish.
